After blackmailing the giant supermarket Tesco, a former tax inspector was caught and sentenced to six years in jail.
Philip McHugh 52-year-old, of Clitheroe, Lancashire, sent 76 letters threatening to bomb the supermarket if he wasn’t given the enormous sum of £1milion.
Apparently, Philip McHugh was an online gambling addict who had gambling debts of £37,000 and perhaps this he thought to be a solution of obtaining money for gambling.
At first he send threatening letters to Tesco offices in Dundee in which he demanded money. This tactic failed but he didn’t stop - he decided to send hoax bomb warnings to 76 Tesco supermarkets, warning of what he called "Black Saturday". 14 Tesco supermarkets were closed, costing the Tesco chain an estimated £1.4m in lost revenue.
